Summary

In this novel of anger, jealousy, betrayal and murder, the Queen of Mystery transports us back to ancient Egypt 2000 B。C。 where a priest’s daughter, investigating a suspicious death, uncovers a wasp’s nest of jealousy, betrayal, and serial murder。

It is Egypt in 2000 BC, where death gives meaning to life。 At the foot of a cliff lies the broken, twisted body of Nofret, concubine to a ka-priest。 Young, beautiful, and venomous, most agree that it was fate—she deserved to die like a snake!

But at her father's house on the banks of the Nile, the priest's daughter Renisenb believes that the woman's death is suspicious。 Increasingly, she becomes convinced that the source of evil lurks within their household—and watches helplessly as the family's passions explode in murder。 。 。 。

As the wife of an eminent archaeologist, Agatha Christie took part in several expeditions to the Middle East。 Drawing upon this experience and exhaustive research, she wrote this serial killer mystery laid in Egypt 4000 years ago。

I thought the main character was kind of an idiot but not in a totally annoying way。 Very atmospheric and excellent reveal as always。

This is not the first time I've read this novel - I am re-reading it with my U3A Agatha Christie Reading Group。 See my previous review。When Imhotep, the Ka-priest, returns to his family, he brings with him an unwelcome surprise, a concubine from the North, who is in fact younger than his recently widowed daughter。 None of his household like the concubine, and she plainly does not like them。 She tries to turn the family against their father and seems determined to stir up trouble。But what Nofret, This is not the first time I've read this novel - I am re-reading it with my U3A Agatha Christie Reading Group。 See my previous review。When Imhotep, the Ka-priest, returns to his family, he brings with him an unwelcome surprise, a concubine from the North, who is in fact younger than his recently widowed daughter。 None of his household like the concubine, and she plainly does not like them。 She tries to turn the family against their father and seems determined to stir up trouble。But what Nofret, the concubine, does, as one of the family remarks, is reveals where trouble and evil already are present。In the introductory Author's Note Agatha Christie points out that the fact that the action of the book takes place on the West bank of the Nile at Thebes in Egypt about 2000 BC is actually incidental to the story。 It is a story that could have been played out against any setting。 It is a story of jealousy, a father who dominates too much, and children who are chafing against the bit。 The murder of the concubine is just the first in a series of incidents, and the author holds various characters up for us to scrutinise。We see the action mainly through the eyes of Imhotep's daughter Renisenb, who is not always the most reliable judge if character, and she is bewildered as various members of the household are killed, and she is not sure who to trust。The author puts her knowledge of Egyptian funerary rites and procedures to good use in providing the reader with an authentic background for a solid murder mystery。 In all there are 5 murders, enough to overwhelm even the most vigilant family。 。。。more

I’m re-reading all of Agatha Christie‘s novels in order and slogged through this one。 This is the only one so far that looks back in time (to ancient Egypt)。 I love that Christie was into archeology, but the character development that she usually does such a good job of was lacking, and there was so much stilted (I think she was going for ancient-sounding) dialogue and not a of action (show me, don’t tell me please)。 I’m excited to get back to 1940’s England which is where I’m at with her regula I’m re-reading all of Agatha Christie‘s novels in order and slogged through this one。 This is the only one so far that looks back in time (to ancient Egypt)。 I love that Christie was into archeology, but the character development that she usually does such a good job of was lacking, and there was so much stilted (I think she was going for ancient-sounding) dialogue and not a of action (show me, don’t tell me please)。 I’m excited to get back to 1940’s England which is where I’m at with her regular mysteries。 。。。more

A very interesting concept, and a very interesting setting。 The story, however, left a lot to be desired!

I was intrigued by the premise of this title, and the setting, but in the end, couldn't continue with it。 I'm slightly aghast that I have chosen to abandon an Agatha Christie title but here I am, doing just that。 I just didn't care。 Like at all。 I was bored with the story and the main character almost from the first few paragraphs。 It felt like Christie took an extra long time setting up the scene and the characters for the crime。 By the time the crime happened, I was feeling very annoyed that i I was intrigued by the premise of this title, and the setting, but in the end, couldn't continue with it。 I'm slightly aghast that I have chosen to abandon an Agatha Christie title but here I am, doing just that。 I just didn't care。 Like at all。 I was bored with the story and the main character almost from the first few paragraphs。 It felt like Christie took an extra long time setting up the scene and the characters for the crime。 By the time the crime happened, I was feeling very annoyed that it hadn't happened earlier in the story and I would have to keep reading about these whiny people。 Finally, I just stopped reading and decided it was for the best that Christie and I part ways on this title。 I'm in the minority on this title, it gets high reviews, but it was not for me。 。。。more

Christie transports the reader to a time about 4,000 years ago。 Imhotep, the fussy & pompous ka-priest and wealthy landowner, brings a new, younger concubine home with him when he returns from overseeing his property to the north。 Nofret is secure in her beauty and her ability to wrap the patriarch around her little finger and promptly alienates the entire household--from Imhotep's three sons (Yahmose, Sobek, & Ipy) to his elder sons' wives, Satipy and Kait。 Esa, Imhotep's mother, sees the girl Christie transports the reader to a time about 4,000 years ago。 Imhotep, the fussy & pompous ka-priest and wealthy landowner, brings a new, younger concubine home with him when he returns from overseeing his property to the north。 Nofret is secure in her beauty and her ability to wrap the patriarch around her little finger and promptly alienates the entire household--from Imhotep's three sons (Yahmose, Sobek, & Ipy) to his elder sons' wives, Satipy and Kait。 Esa, Imhotep's mother, sees the girl for what she is and knows her son for a fool。。。it isn't long before the upheaval turns dangerous, as she knew it would。When Nofret dies, ostensibly from an accident on the steep path leading to the Tomb high on the hill, The household breathes a sigh of relief。 The outsider is gone, surely everything will return to normal。 But the deaths keep coming and it begins to look like the shade of Nofret won't be satisfied until the entire family has paid in blood。 But Esa and Hori, Imhotep's trusted scribe, believe a more human hand is behind it all。 Will they discover who it is before death reaches even Renisenb, the daughter of the house? One thing about this books。。if you don't recognize early on who the culprit is (I did), not to worry。 It's all a matter of attrition, so you should definitely figure it out before the final attempt。 And, unlike And Then There Were None, you aren't left with nobody and a mystery of who could have possibly done it。 When "death comes as an end," you definitely know who did it。 It would, I think have been more satisfying if Hori, our erstwhile amateur detective, had halted the wholesale killing by detecting things a bit sooner--when the reader still had suspects to choose from。I do appreciate Dame Agatha's venture into historical mysteries。 Her second husband's interest in antiquity has definitely rubbed off and she gives us a good look at life (and death) in ancient Egypt。 Of course people are people and they tend to have the same drives and reactions no matter where or when they live。 So, we wind up with a tale of jealousy, hate, ambition, pride, power, and revenge。 Christie, as always tells a good tale, but I must confess that I appreciate early- to mid-twentieth century a bit more than I do 2000 B。C。 ★★★ and 1/2。 (rounded up)First posted on my blog My Reader's Block。 。。。more

Not my favorite of Agatha Christie's mysteries, but the setting was rich and well-researched, which makes sense considering that Dame Christie's husband was an archaeologist。 The plot is sprinkled with little descriptions of daily life in ancient Egypt, their traditions, and their manner of dealing with illness, all of which are fascinating to anyone who enjoys Egyptian history。 Not my favorite of Agatha Christie's mysteries, but the setting was rich and well-researched, which makes sense considering that Dame Christie's husband was an archaeologist。 The plot is sprinkled with little descriptions of daily life in ancient Egypt, their traditions, and their manner of dealing with illness, all of which are fascinating to anyone who enjoys Egyptian history。 。。。more

I have ultimately mixed feelings on this book。 The actual murder mystery at the centre of the plot was good。 The ultimate solution made sense internally。 Then again, this is what Christie is well known for。 The explanation wrapping everything up does have to kinda stretch to explore the behaviour of the killer but not so much that it is unbelievable。 It was maybe a stretch to leap to speculations on the emotions of the killer (particularly at one point mentioning an incident when they were a chi I have ultimately mixed feelings on this book。 The actual murder mystery at the centre of the plot was good。 The ultimate solution made sense internally。 Then again, this is what Christie is well known for。 The explanation wrapping everything up does have to kinda stretch to explore the behaviour of the killer but not so much that it is unbelievable。 It was maybe a stretch to leap to speculations on the emotions of the killer (particularly at one point mentioning an incident when they were a child) but overall, it was decent。 What I didn’t like were the characters。 Not all of them。 Some of them definitely did grate tho。 The main character despite being a grown woman with a child and married for nearly a decade before the plot started comes off as ridiculously childish at points。 She seems to need basic concepts like “appearances can be deceiving” explained to her。 A normal adult woman should not need something so blatantly obvious explained and I don’t think she was so ridiculously sheltered that it never occurred to her that people lie。 Another character just gets branded as “stupid” when there is no real evidence to back that up。 Disinterested, yeah。 Stupid? I think that’s going a bit far。I listened to the audible version of this book read by Emilia Fox。 Her narration was good and you definitely get a feel for the individual characters。 I do think that she mispronounced some of the names however (Yahmose being pronounced like “Yack-mo-sah” when it should be “Ya-mose”) but I think that might just be the Egypt-lover in me getting nitpicky。 。。。more

Perfectly serviceable mystery, as would be expected from the author。 In her forward, she states that there's nothing particular about this story that requires it to be set in Ancient Egypt - and while that goes some way to making the characters relatable, it seems like a missed opportunity。None of the characters were likeable, which is often a problem with mysteries。 I suppose it's what separates them from tragedies - in mysteries you're resigned to folks being picked off, because all of them we Perfectly serviceable mystery, as would be expected from the author。 In her forward, she states that there's nothing particular about this story that requires it to be set in Ancient Egypt - and while that goes some way to making the characters relatable, it seems like a missed opportunity。None of the characters were likeable, which is often a problem with mysteries。 I suppose it's what separates them from tragedies - in mysteries you're resigned to folks being picked off, because all of them were twats to start with。 But it does make it so when you reach the end, you really don't care who did it, or why, or who lives and what comes of them after。 I was pretty detached from the whole thing by the time the first murder popped up, and the only thing that would have made me happy (view spoiler)[ was if she wasn't actually dead and really was haunting them, in collaboration with guitar-boy。 Alas。 Embalming does have a way of making that less of an option。 (hide spoiler)]At any rate, while I didn't love it, I have certainly read much worse books, and at least it was quick。 。。。more

I enjoyed this AC book more than I expected I would。 This time we went back to Ancient Egypt in 2000 BC, where evil preyed upon Imhotep’s family。 An important member of the community as a Ka-priest, Imhotep dealt with the businesses of the dead – his job was to oversee the rituals, burial and the management of corpses。 Little did he know that he soon had to mix his business and personal affairs when death visited too close to home after he brought back a charming young concubine from the north。T I enjoyed this AC book more than I expected I would。 This time we went back to Ancient Egypt in 2000 BC, where evil preyed upon Imhotep’s family。 An important member of the community as a Ka-priest, Imhotep dealt with the businesses of the dead – his job was to oversee the rituals, burial and the management of corpses。 Little did he know that he soon had to mix his business and personal affairs when death visited too close to home after he brought back a charming young concubine from the north。The mystery was not a difficult one, but told in an amusing style, ala Christie。 This time there was no amateur sleuth nor a figure like the queer egg-shaped foreign detective to reveal the killer。 However, there were interesting characters that helped carry the story。 My favorite was Esa, she was such a strong and funny character, full of zest in life despite (or as she would insist, BECAUSE OF) her old age, her wit and her sharp tongue。 It was funny how she just spoke her mind and lambasted other annoying characters! I could only wish I’d be able to do this and get away with it IRL! HahaBonus point had to go to the romance bit that Christie included as part of the story。 I swear sometimes I find much sweeter romance in crime fiction or murder mystery than I do in other genres。 Haha I’ll end my thoughts on this book with my fave quote from the book: “And your mind is not like the minds of the rest of your family。 It does not turn in upon itself, seeking to encase itself in narrow walls。 Your mind is like my mind, it looks over the River, seeing a world of changes, of new ideas – seeing a world where all things are possible to those with courage and vision。。” 。。。more
